On-Call Schedules

Understand current on-call lookup, calendar events, recurrence, and escalation policy usage

On-call schedules tell MonitoringDog who is responsible at a specific time. Escalation policies can notify the Current on-call person instead of a fixed team member.

Schedules are calendar events

An on-call schedule entry contains:

PartWhat it controls
MembersThe people assigned to the on-call window
Start DateWhen the window starts
End DateWhen the window ends
All DayWhether the event covers the full selected days
RepeatWhether the event repeats

MonitoringDog parses schedule entries into calendar windows so the dashboard can show upcoming on-calls and current coverage.

Recurring schedules use repeat rules

Recurring events repeat by day, week, month, or year.

Repeat settingWhat it changes
Repeat everyInterval between schedule occurrences
FrequencyDay, week, month, or year
Repeat onWeekdays used by weekly recurrence
EndsWhether the recurrence never ends, ends on a date, or ends after a number of occurrences

Recurring schedules must have a valid recurrence pattern. If the pattern is invalid, MonitoringDog rejects the schedule.

Current on-call is time-based

The Who's on-call? page can search for on-call coverage at a selected date and time. MonitoringDog also uses the current time when escalation policies need the current on-call responder.

If no schedule covers the time, MonitoringDog cannot resolve a current on-call person for that policy step.

On-call works with escalation policies

An escalation policy step can alert Current on-call person. This keeps policies stable while the schedule changes.

Use this when the responder rotation changes often. Use fixed team members when the same person should always receive that step.
